Passengers is a 2016 English movie, it released on 28 December 2016. The film is directed by Morten Tyldum and produced by Jon Spaihts. The stars of the movie are Jennifer Lawrence, Chris Pratt, Michael Sheen and Laurence Fishburne. The plot of this film revolves around an interstellar journey to another solar system with hundreds of passengers in hypersleep chambers aboard a gigantic space ship. One passenger wakes up from her sleep because of a spacecraft malfunction. Now she has to find out if there are any other survivors aboard the ship before life support system shuts down completely. The film has been shot in Cape Town and Johannesburg in South Africa with budget of $110 million. The film premiered at the Regency Village Theater in Los Angeles on December 11, 2016 and received mixed reviews from critics. The movie was released on December 21, 2016 by Sony Pictures Entertainment in 3D and 2D formats. The movie has made $18.4 million on opening day, marking the third best female directorial debut ever and the best opening day of Jennifer Lawrence's career. It collected $26 million on its opening weekend, becoming one of Lawrence's biggest openings ever, as well as the tenth best opening for a December release and is estimated to gross $100-150 million domestically at the box office. It finished in the #1 position at the Box Office for opening weekend in the US. However, people in India have shown their support towards this film and has shown huge response towards this movie. It is expected that the movie will quickly jump into the top five by end of its second week of release and will surely become a blockbuster by end of its third week since it is not having many competition.

While shooting the film in Cape Town, South Africa, a wall collapsed on 20 September 2016 during a stunt sequence which resulted in the injury of an actor named John Laborteaux. He was immediately rushed to the hospital for emergency surgery. The actor is best known for his role in TV series "Northwest Passage". The wall collapse happened at Cape Town Film Studios when technicians were prepping for a high-speed camera shot during the filming of an action sequence involving Laborteaux and his co-star Ben Hardy. The film grossed $202 million worldwide against its $110 million production budget. In the United States and Canada, "Passengers" opened alongside "Sing", "Bad Santa 2", and "Why Him?", and was initially expected to gross around $30 million from 3,478 theaters in its opening weekend. However, after grossing $6.1 million on its first day (including $1.8 million from Thursday night previews), weekend estimates were lowered to $25 million. It ended up debuting to $24.7 million, finishing first at the box office but marking a disappointing start for both Lawrence and Pratt (her lowest opener since 2010's "Winter's Bone" and his lowest since 2013's "Delivery Man"). The film dropped 54% in its second weekend to $11.
